Jackenstein before battle

Jackenstein is a mini-boss in Chapter 4. He is encountered in the depths of the library in the Dark Sanctuary. The Darkner version of a float kept inside the church, he desires no company due to his "scairy face."

Appearance[]

Jackenstein is very large in size, dwarfing the Fun Gang by a wide margin. His build is very stocky and muscular, with a vein poking out of his left fist. He appears to be stitched together in some areas, namely his shoulders, pectorals, and hands. His body is almost entirely pale save for splotches of a sickly green around his elbows and the right part of his chest. His "shoulder pads" are bright orange with a darker orange circle in the middle. His pectorals also sport the orange spots. His chest appears to have a skeleton's visage on it, with a nose socket and a mouth on his lower torso. His "head" is a large, black mask with a pumpkin in the front of it, and has a bolt on either side of his head. His true face, once the mask is taken off, appears to be a diminutive cat head. He has a small tail with a bright orange ball at the end of it.

In the Light World, he appears to be a Jack-o-Lantern on top of an old coat left on a chair.

Personality[]

Jackenstein is convinced that his face is "hoarible", which is why he wears a mask and fears light. He is also extremely shy, claiming that he was bullied for his "scairy" face and blushing if told that he is cute.

Like Susie, Jackenstein makes very frequent spelling mistakes. This may indicate that he has a unique style of speech, possibly as a result of his isolation.

When Jackenstein first encounters the Fun Gang, he tries to be intimidating and to "spook" them. However, shining light on him with the SOUL reveals that he in in fact timid and clumsy. After he declares the Fun Gang his "frainds", he is determined to help them, such as by giving them his Claimbclaws, and by rescuing them when they are knocked down by the Knight.

Main Story[]

Chapter 4[]

Jackenstein is encountered as the party travels deeper into the library, eventually reaching the Dark Sanctuary, where he is hiding. After being defeated by the party, he runs off in embarrassment as the party can now see his "scary face", only to crash into a chandelier and hurt himself. Ralsei tries to heal him, unaware that he's only healing Jack's mask instead of his head. Old Man Gerson then causes Susie to accidentally heal Jack. Feeling better, Jack proclaims the Lightners as his "Frainds" and gifts them his Claimbclaws as thanks. Afterward, he hangs around Gerson's Study, sweeping the floors.

Jack doesn't appear in Susie's flawed Dark World, however when that fountain is sealed, and the second Dark Fountain is able to re-transform the rest of the church, he reappears to help the Lightners climb after The Knight, and after being knocked down, works with the rest of the Church Darkners to launch the heroes to the peak. If no Darkners were recruited, Jack will instead allow the party to climb on their own once the tower becomes too fragile, before being suddenly struck down by the Knight's attacks, presumably leading to his death.

In Battle[]

Custom ACTs[]

ScaredyCat[]

This ACT appears after one death and can be used by Kris only. It alters the pumpkin's dialogue or just makes it play faster. Moreover, the pumpkin speaking doesn't stop the player from moving.

Unleash[]

Exposes the enemy's weak point, in this case, a strong light to the pumpkin.

TreasureHunt[]

Susie's S-Action. Increases pickup range and TP Value of treasure.

Brighten[]

Ralsei's R-Action. Makes the SOUL shine brighter.

Attacks[]

Most of his attacks put you in a haunted house maze, dodging ghosts, collecting TP dots, and obtaining an exit key. When you are close to reaching an exit, a pumpkin appears and says "YOUR TAKING TOO LONG" and chases the SOUL. One of his next attacks the pumpkin blocks the exit and makes you take a different path that was always available. The pumpkin's voice line is later altered as his turns go on. One attack makes your SOUL stretched, with the voice line, "YOUR LONG." An alternate version of this line is, if the player has used the ACT ScaredyCat, it will simply say "LO NG." Another has a poorly drawn pumpkin with a low quality "your taking too long," with the normal pumpkin appearing saying "your taking too long IS TAKING TOO LONG." Using ScaredyCat here blows the poorly drawn pumpkin after the first word and makes the pumpkin just say „YOUR TAKING TOO LONG“. His next attack has you get a dress instead of a key. The pumpkin appears, but says "YOUR TAKING TOO TOO" (you're taking tutu). If the player has used ScaredyCat, the pumpkin will simply say “TUTU“. The pumpkin moves very fast and catches up to you, giving you back the dress you dropped, "YOUR TOO TOO." Finally, many small pumpkins appear and say the "Your taking too long" line and each chase the SOUL. If ScaredyCat is used, this shortens to just “LONG“.

Once you obtain enough TP, you can cast the Unleash act, allowing your SOUL to emit a light, weakening and shrinking the pumpkin as he moves around. This is done at least 3 times. As you finish the battle, the pumpkin screams and bounces very fast as more light appears. Jackenstein cannot be fought violently as any attacks will miss due to the darkness. Any attempt on beating him violently by cheating in Noelle just crashes the game upon Jackenstein's loss.

His attacks are also the longest, taking 9 hours each attack if you try to wait it out, so just do the maze.

Trivia[]

  • Jackenstein may be a reference to Big Lantern Ghost from Paper Mario. Both are spooky creatures fought in the dark and both are defeated using light. The similarities are further shown when sound effects from Paper Mario are heard when Jackenstein runs off after the battle.
    • When Kris's ACT Unleash is used, an audio clip that sounds like Mario plays during the fight. That was actually Toby impersonating him.
  • Jackenstein's manner of speech and chasing pumpkin attack likely allude to various YouTube Poops, a form of video where clips from shows, games, or movies are edited to create absurdist humor. This often takes the form of rearranging dialogue to have characters saying new, strange phrases, in this case "YOUR TAKING TOO LONG" becoming "YOUR LONG" and "YOUR TAKING TOO TOO". A popular source for YouTube Poops are the Zelda CD-i games, Link: Faces of Evil and Zelda: Wand of Gamelon, and Jackenstein paraphrases several quotes said by the villain of both games, Ganon ("You dare bring light into my lair?! You must die!" and "Not into the pit! It burns!")
  • The chasing attack might also be a reference to Pizza Tower, specifically, how PizzaFace chases the player when the time runs out in the escape sequences.
  • The maze attacks may possibly be a reference to the popular Flash game, "The World's Hardest Game" as the gameplay for both are very similar.
  • Jackenstein's battle was teased by Toby Fox before the release of Chapter 4. Said teaser was a funny Halloween video.
  • Jackenstein's battle effectively teaches the player how to use mechanics used in the fight against the Titan that appears later in the chapter.
  • His name is a mix of Jack-o'-lantern and Frankenstein.
  • Jackenstein's spooky face is likely a reference to the 1983 arcade game, Sinistar, in which a large face (the game's namesake) chases after the player's spacecraft if they take too long to complete the level.
  • This is most likely the fight Toby's family called "a cry for help".
  • In actuality, Jackenstein's first use of the 'YOUR TAKING TOO LONG' attack is not timed, and will always happen at a certain threshold that the SOUL reaches after grabbing the key.
  • In one of Jackenstein's attacks, there is actually a secret exit that does not require a key.
  • If you do not use 'Unleash' whenever you get the opportunity, or you do not collect enough treasure, instead of looping, Jackenstein will use a new attack, which consists of ghosts and treasure approaching you, and the darkness engulfing them, so you have to remember their positions. This attack is repeated until you use Unleash a total of 3 times.
  • This makes Jackenstein the only enemy with non-looping attack patterns, unless you count the repeating attack mentioned above.
