Several details point to the Dark World being less than real, such as Kris's Wood Blade having a carbon core and Kris's weapon in the intro and epilogue being a pencil. Despite this, if Lightners receive harm in the Dark World, this also carries when they return to the Light World. The most notable example is the fate of Berdly on non-Pacifist routes. If Queen is defeated through violence in her battle, Berdly will remove the plug on his face himself, resulting in electrocution and injury of his right arm. This injury is reflected on the LIght World after the battle. Similarly, if Berdly is defeated in the Weird Route, he will remain unconscious in the Light World.

The Dark World is an alternate dimension in which most of Deltarune takes place.

Overview

Dark Worlds are powered by Dark Fountains and are inhabited by Darkners. Consisting of multiple "worlds", each represents a different location in Hometown depending where a Dark Fountain is opened. For instance, the Unused Classroom contains a rug similarly colored as the Field, a checker board alike to the Great Board and a cupboard filled with playing cards similar to Card Castle.

Similar to Dark Worlds, the appearance of Darkners depend on the location of the Dark Fountain in the Light World. In addition, Darkners cannot reside in foreign Dark Worlds for long, as they become statues after a certain amount of time. The only exception to this is in the Dark World where Castle Town is located, as its Fountain is made of pure darkness.

Lightners on the other hand, are able to visit and leave Dark Worlds freely through doors in the Light World, though so far only Kris' party is shown to do this. In addition, they are able to transport Darkners from one Dark World to another by carrying their Hometown equivalents.

Curiously, Ralsei, who is presumed to be a Darkner, is able to travel from one Dark World to another without the assistance of a Lightner, as well as persist in other Dark Worlds without consequence, unlike other Darkners.

Main Story

Chapter 1

Kris and Susie first entered the Dark World through a supply closet at their school. This school Dark World contained the one and only pure Fountain of Darkness. After defeating King, and sealing Card Castle's Dark Fountain, Kris and Susie returned to Hometown.

Chapter 2

The following day, Kris and Susie revisits the Closet Dark World. After meeting up with Ralsei and Lancer, allowing the inhabitants of the Classroom Dark World to live on the Closet Dark World. However, as a result of the sealing in the previous Chapter, the Unused Classroom Dark World can no longer be visited.

Later on, Kris and Susie (along with Berdly and Noelle) went to study at the library only to find that it, too, now harbored a Dark Fountain. This library Dark World was ruled over by Queen. After defeating Queen, and sealing the Dark Fountain on her Mansion, Kris and Susie return to Hometown once more.

Sublocations

These are the currently known locations within the Dark World, ordered by when Kris and their party visits them.

Trivia

  • If Chapter 1 has already been beaten once on any save file, at the very beginning of the game, Kris can go back to sleep instead of going to school. This teleports them directly into the Dark World, skipping the introductory part of the game in Hometown.
    • In the demo version of Chapter 1, this was the easiest way to obtain the Wrist Protector.
  • While the inhabitants of the Unused Classroom's dark world have their Hometown counterparts scattered throughout the classroom, the Library's dark world inhabitants seem to all be contained within computers in the computer lab. The only exception seems to be Spamton, who takes the form of a trash can full of discarded spam mail.
  • Using the Cell Phone while in the Dark World does not work, and plays an unskippable audio cue. The same audio cue was used in association with W. D. Gaster, a hidden character in Undertale.
