Carol to Kris and the SOUL, Chapter 4

Carol Holiday is a major antagonist who makes her debut in Chapter 4. She is the mother of Noelle Holiday and Dess Holiday, the wife of Rudolph Holiday, the best friend of Asgore, and the mayor of Hometown.

Profile[]

Appearance[]

Carol is a doe reindeer with ash blonde fur, messy light blonde hair, narrow blue eyes, blue lips and blue antlers. She wears a blue cardigan, black pants and a pearl necklace.

Personality[]

As noted by her family and multiple other figures, Carol has a very cold and hostile demeanor, making her dislike towards certain people openly clear, as seen when she coldly tells Susie she is not welcome anywhere near her household, and to never speak to her daughter again. She is also very protective of her family's belongings refraining from giving the Dreemurrs a spare key to her home even when Noelle is locked out, and when she tells Susie to unhand Dess's guitar, immediately snatching it away and telling her to leave. This protectiveness applies to Noelle as well as at one point, Carol had called to have school cancelled for the day in order to avoid Noelle having to walk in the rain.[1] Noelle talks about how she enjoys playing Cat Petters on rainy days and describes a minigame she enjoyed playing as a child. She recalls finding something in the game that no one else had seen, then notes that she thinks there is someone else who has seen it but that they wouldn't tell her if she asked. She then links the minigame, asking people to try and find proof if they think they can. However, Carol's strictness does not spare Noelle either as she is scolded in the kitchen offscreen. However, Asgore has claimed that Carol can be lovely when getting to know her, a claim that appears to hold truth to an extent as she is far more civil and lenient with Asgore despite him being late on rent payments and is welcoming and inviting when speaking with Kris (and presumably the player) counteracting her established demeanor.

Main Story[]

History[]

In her youth, Carol met Rudolph Holiday and was immediately told by him she was "a HOT piece of work," causing Carol to slap him so hard he blacked out. Despite this first meeting, Carol and Rudolph would eventually marry and have two daughters, Dess and Noelle. Carol and Rudolph were good friends with the Dreemurr family, often going over to their house for the holidays and watching Christmas specials together. However, by the time Dess went missing, Carol stopped going over to the Dreemurr house with Noelle and Rudy following shortly after. Carol would eventually become mayor of Hometown and still keep in contact with Asgore and Kris, having the latter's contact information and the former work as a caretaker/gardener for her residence while overseeing his Flower Shop as a landlord. It is mentioned by Alphys, that Carol and Undyne have been to the underground shelter on multiple occasions for undisclosed reasons.

Chapter 1[]

After Kris's return from the Dark World, they can visit town hall where Politics Bear and the Hand receptionist mention that Carol is busy with work. When speaking to Noelle, she will mention she does not want to ask her mother for a spare key as to not disturb her. In Asgore's Flower King shop, a letter can be found telling Asgore that he didn't pay his rent and that he should start selling flowers instead of giving them away. Prior to Chapter 4, this was speculated to be Carol due to the initial it signing off, and the title of her theme song ("C") confirms this.

Chapter 2[]

If Kris visits Town Hall, the receptionist will mention that Carol is conducting preparations for Hometown's festival.

Chapter 4[]

Carol makes her official debut in this chapter, arriving home from work early and spotting Susie playing Dess' guitar for Noelle. Furious, Carol coldly demands Susie unhand the guitar and proceeds to snatch it from her hands, ignoring Noelle's attempts to defend Susie and coldly asks her to wait in the kitchen. Before Susie leaves, Carol tells her she is not welcome in her home and to never speak to Noelle again, though is rebuffed when the girl mentions she will take her to the festival regardless. Annoyed, Carol tells Asgore to finish eating the snack tray he is holding outside while she speaks to Noelle. If the Player has Kris interact with one of Carol's miniature Santa music players, she will tell them to turn it off before leaving as to not waste the battery. If the player attempts to leave normally, Carol will hear Kris footsteps and speak with them, apologizing for the confrontation earlier and reassures that Kris is welcome in her home anytime.

If the Weird Route is followed, Carol will still arrive home early and kick everyone barring Noelle out of the house offscreen and does not meet to speak with Kris. However at the end of the chapter she will leave Kris a voicemail sking if they are going to take Noelle to the festival and mentions that Noelle is looking forward to seeing them.

Trivia[]

  • Continuing the theme naming of Christmas related to family with the Holidays, Carol's name comes from carols, songs that are sung during Christmas time and her cold and hostile demeanor could be a reference to Ebeneezer Scrooge from Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol.
  • An unused sprite in the game files depicts her with a dark fluid, possibly blood, smeared across her face.
  • Carol is one of the individuals theorized to be the Knight, as well a Kris' mysterious caller. This is mainly due to the antlers seen on the Knight, as well as her arriving home right after Kris alerts whoever is calling them that Susie obtained Dess's guitar, with them stating that they'd "be right there."
  • Carol's interaction with Susie in Chapter 4 has spawned several jokes within the fandom that she is homophobic, and disapproves of her and Noelle's relationship.
  • Carol's name was foreshadowed in Flower King, Asgore's flower shop, where a note for his eviction was signed by "C."
    • The music that plays when Carol appears is also titled "C."
